Dr. Stephen Shainbart is a licensed clinical psychologist in New York and Canada. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fordham University, an American Psychological Association (APA)-accredited doctoral program. He also serves on the faculty of Yeshiva University’s graduate psychology program, where he supervises doctoral students in clinical training.
Dr. Shainbart works with adults, adolescents, couples, parents, executives, and other high-functioning professionals. He specializes in treating depression, anxiety, ADHD, OCD, panic attacks, anger management, addiction recovery, relationship and family concerns, workplace stress, life transitions, and career development.
His treatment integrates evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), psychoanalytic and insight-oriented psychotherapy, mindfulness, and stress-reduction techniques. He believes that lasting change comes from understanding the underlying causes of emotional difficulties while developing practical strategies that improve daily functioning and overall quality of life. His style combines insight, thoughtful questions, practical tools, and direct, compassionate feedback tailored to each individual’s unique needs.
When working with couples, Dr. Shainbart goes beyond improving communication by helping partners understand the deeper patterns that drive conflict. Drawing from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, attachment theory, and psychoanalytic principles, he helps couples identify recurring relationship cycles, better understand each partner’s emotional needs, and develop greater empathy for one another. By combining practical communication strategies with exploration of the underlying issues that keep couples stuck, he helps couples build healthier, more secure, and more fulfilling relationships.
Dr. Shainbart also has extensive expertise in comprehensive psychological and psychoeducational assessments. His evaluations examine cognitive functioning, learning differences, attention, executive functioning, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and social and emotional functioning, providing a detailed understanding of each individual’s strengths and challenges. This comprehensive perspective enables him to identify subtle patterns and underlying issues that may otherwise be overlooked, whether they affect academic performance, career success, relationships, or emotional well-being. He uses these findings to develop targeted recommendations, practical interventions, and individualized treatment plans that help clients gain insight into the root causes of their difficulties and achieve meaningful, lasting improvement.
Dr. Shainbart understands that seeking therapy requires courage and vulnerability. Whether you are navigating career demands, parenting, relationship challenges, family concerns, or a major life transition, he strives to create a collaborative, supportive environment where you feel understood, respected, and comfortable exploring difficult issues. His goal is not only to help relieve symptoms, but also to help you gain greater self-understanding, resilience, and the practical tools to create lasting, positive change.
At Greenwich Psychology Group, our symptom checker helps clients track their symptoms of depression or anxiety. Taking the assessment doesn't provide a formal diagnosis, but it can help you determine what next steps you may need to take. The evaluation uses a series of questions to review the feelings and symptoms you've experienced over the past two weeks. The results will help you distinguish if professional help is the best next step.
