Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive-behavioral therapy is an evidence-based therapy for children and teens to meet life challenges. The focus of treatment is on how thinking and behaving impact emotions. Our child experts will help your child identify their automatic negative ‘thinking traps,’ provide guidance on changing their thinking, and provide practice opportunities to develop mastery. We also provide homework assignments between sessions to help your child learn self-help skills with negative thinking patterns and behaviors.

We encourage children to test out ways to challenge their ‘thinking traps’ between sessions, so they can learn self-help skills to increase their self-efficacy in dealing with emotional issues. An important goal of therapy is to prepare children to expect challenges and emphasize the continued practice of these skills to assist in stressful times. Our child clinicians are trained in CBT, trauma-focused CBT, parent skills training, and family therapy.

Greenwich Psychology Group provides pediatric CBT therapy in Greenwich, Connecticut, and Manhattan, New York.

What Does CBT Do for Kids?

Cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques help kids understand how anxiety impacts their feelings and behaviors. Untreated anxiety usually worsens because children learn to avoid anxiety-provoking situations, which is helpful in the short term. However, as the child avoids the situation, the stress worsens and can take hold of your child. One of the most effective treatments is CBT is to recognize that the anxiety is separate from them. At GPG, we encourage kids to name their anxiety. Some children call it the ‘bully brain,’ whereas others call it Mr. Scary. A child clinician will help your child learn skills to handle Mr. Scary, helping your child conceptualize that they control the anxiety rather than the other way around. Through consistent sessions and at-home exercises, children begin learning how to respond to situations differently to lessen stress. CBT can improve your child’s anxiety, mood, and behavior.

Children will develop habits to help them control:

  • Self-defeating thoughts.
  • Tantrums.
  • Defiance.
  • Impulsivity

Your child will instead learn how to replace negative thoughts with alternative ways of thinking, learn new coping skills, increase self-control, and improve self-esteem. The therapist will provide tangible ways for your child to feel empowered and take control over their responses, feelings, and behaviors.

What Is the Difference Between CBT for Adults and Minors?

CBT is an effective method to help people take control of their negative thoughts and behaviors, making them more positive and productive. While cognitive therapy for adults and minors follows similar structures and goals, there are differences between the two approaches. Some contrasts between CBT for adults and children include:

Level of Complexity

Children and adults have different thinking abilities. Adults may be able to express their thought processes with more clarity than a child would. As patients progress through their sessions, some CBT methods may become more complex to help patients develop better skills and dig deeper into changing their thoughts and behaviors. For instance, adult patients may use abstract thinking to test hypotheses about their negative thoughts. Young kids won’t have the cognitive ability to engage in hypothesis testing because they have yet to develop abstract thinking.

Therapy Techniques

Clinicians accommodate the techniques and methods to a patient’s age and development. While adults and adolescents have improved verbal capabilities, young children may not be able to understand their thoughts and feelings, so the focus is on behaviors. Our expert child clinicians customize techniques that are developmental approbate for school-age children.

Parent Involvement

While adults seek therapy independently, minors need a parent’s permission to attend treatment. Your child’s therapist may involve you to understand your child’s needs and help you become their therapist at home. Younger kids are more likely to have parental figures immersed in their sessions because they need extra support to develop skills.

Benefits of CBT for Kids

Children can benefit from CBT whether they have a diagnosed condition or not. CBT helps children enhance their problem-solving, self-control, and social skills. Some benefits of CBT for kids include:

  • Development of practical coping skills.
  • Better thought and emotional management.
  • Improved levels of irritability, anger, and aggression.
  • Effective treatment for anxiety, ADHD, and more.

Child Behavioral Therapy Techniques

Pediatric CBT has several techniques to approach a child's needs. Your child's therapist will decide the best approach depending on your child's specific condition. Some CBT techniques used in child behavioral therapy include:

Play therapy:

Role-playing, arts and crafts, physical play, and more activities can help children address problems and find solutions. It can also help keep a child engaged in the session.

Restructuring:

Changing negative thoughts to be more positive helps children approach challenging situations differently. Instead of beating themselves down about something, they can find the positive side of the issue.

Modeling:

Your child’s therapist may act out an example of the desired behavior and then have your child repeat it. Modeling a more productive response helps your child start learning appropriate behaviors.

Exposure therapy:

Slowly exposing your child to things that trigger their anxiety can help them overcome their fears. Exposure therapy in a controlled environment ensures your child confronts their anxiety in increment steps so they can gain confidence to face their fears.

Trauma-focused CBT:

Children affected by traumatic events can benefit from CBT therapy that focuses on their trauma.
